a-victorian-marriage-sir-william-rowan-hamilton | description |William Rowan| = The famous Irish mathematician Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1805 1865) is generally regarded as having been an unhappily married alcoholic. The aim of this essay is to show that, contrary to this widespread belief, Hamilton had a good marriage, that in fact large parts of his marriage were fairly happy. It is discussed where the idea of his marriage as having been an unhappy one came from, and it is shown that according to current standards he was by no means an alcoholic. https://annevanweerden.nl/VictorianMarriage.html (d)

arxiv-1702.05643 | description |William Rowan| = The works of William Rowan Hamilton in Geometrical Optics are presented, with emphasis on the Malus Dupin theorem. According to that theorem, a family of light rays depending on two parameters can be focused to a single point by an optical instrument made of reflecting or refracting surfaces if and only if, before entering the optical instrument, the family of rays is rectangular (\emph{i.e.}, admits orthogonal surfaces). Moreover, that theorem states that a rectangular system of rays remains rectangular after an arbitrary number of reflections through, or refractions across, smooth surfaces of arbitrary shape. The original proof of that theorem due to Hamilton is presented, along with another proof founded in symplectic geometry. It was the proof of that theorem which led Hamilton to introduce his \emph{characteristic function} in Optics, then in Dynamics under the name \emph{action integral} (d)

youtube-DjZB9HvddQk | description |William Rowan| = Computer Musings 2016 Donald Knuth's Christmas Tree Lecture Speaker: Donald Knuth About 1850, William Rowan Hamilton invented the Icosian Game, which involved finding a path that encounters all points of a network without retracing its steps. Variants of his game have turned out to be important in many modern computer applications. The speaker will give evidence that people have been interested in such questions since at least Graeco Roman times. Furthermore, ingenious Sanskrit and Arabic documents from the ninth century, and continuing through medieval times, also reveal that this is perhaps the oldest nontrivial combinatorial problem in the history of civilization. About the Speaker: Donald Ervin Knuth is an American computer scientist, mathematician, and Professor Emeritus at Stanford University. He is the author of the multi volume work The Art of Computer Programming and has been called the "father" of the analysis of algorithms. He contributed to the development of the rigorous analysis of the computational complexity of algorithms and systematized formal mathematical techniques for it. In the process he also popularized the asymptotic notation. In addition to fundamental contributions in several branches of theoretical computer science, Knuth is the creator of the TeX computer typesetting system, the related METAFONT font definition language and rendering system, and the Computer Modern family of typefaces. catherine-disney | description |William Rowan| = Catherine Disney (1800 1853) is known as the `lost love' of the Irish mathematician Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1805 1865), but about herself little is known. Based on what Hamilton wrote about her and scraps of information which were found on various places, extended with conclusions which could be drawn from known events, this is a sketch of how she fell in love with Hamilton in 1824, what the motives may have been for her family to force her to marry the reverend William Barlow (1792 1871), what may have triggered her suicide attempt in 1848 after which she did not live with Barlow any more, and how she spoke with Hamilton shortly before she died. In these two interviews she could finally tell Hamilton that she had also loved him. In the last chapters it is discussed how Catherine's unhappiness seems to have influenced her eldest son, James Barlow (1826 1913), and through him also her granddaughter Jane Barlow (1856 1917). This sketch is supplementary to the essay A Victorian Marriage : Sir William Rowan Hamilton . But being self contained, it can also be read on its own. https://annevanweerden.nl/CatherineDisney.html (d)

arxiv-1606.03315 | description |William Rowan| = Inspired by the relation between the algebra of complex numbers and plane geometry, William Rowan Hamilton sought an algebra of triples for application to three dimensional geometry. Unable to multiply and divide triples, he invented a non commutative division algebra of quadruples, in what he considered his most significant work, generalizing the real and complex number systems. We give a motivated introduction to quaternions and discuss how they are related to Pauli matrices, rotations in three dimensions, the three sphere, the group SU(2) and the celebrated Hopf fibrations.
